Reflection: Wananga - My Goals

During our wananga time, we have been silent reading and writing about our goals. So my reflection for this week is about my goals for this year and the future. I have written a total of six goals, however, I might still continue to add on it throughout the year. Out of my six current goals, it has a mix of; Hauora goals, academic goals, career goals, and other goals such as sports. For my Hauora goals which are also known as my wellbeing goals.

My goals for this section, are spending less time on devices, and focusing on fitness and health. I have chosen to add this as my goal because I have noticed that I have been spending too much time on devices recently. However, this is bad for my health and that is also why I put this as my goal. Now for my academic goals, I will be aiming for excellence in all of my subjects as well as start to bank my credits for next year as a year 11. My career goal is to be a civil engineer when I leave school, when I heard about civil engineering it really interested me. This resulted in me wanting to be a civil engineer when I grow up. As for my other goals, I have put basketball and volleyball on these goals. I am very passionate about these two sports, so I really want to improve my skills in these sports.

What is the text about? How do we know?:

This text is about my current goals and my goals for the future. We know this because I have explained what my goals are, and what they are.

Metaphors & Similes - English

This blog post is my third activity for our writing task matrix. For this activity, I had to explain what a metaphor is and what a simile was. Additionally, we had to show examples of a metaphor and simile and blog it to our blogs. I created a poster to make it more interesting and used canva to create it. Anyway, I have finished my third activity for the writing task matrix. Here is my presentation.

Slavery and Music Through Time - Social Studies

For the past few weeks on Social Studies, we have learned about what the slave trade triangle was and how music affected the world. However, this blog post about the use of spirituals, Harriet Tubman, the underground railroad and how they had a big impact to help the slaves escape.

Spirituals:

Spirituals is a type of religious song that was sung in informal gatherings of slaves. These gatherings range from praise houses, outdoor meetings, brush arbour meetings, bush meetings or camp meetings. During these meetings, the members would sing, chant, dance and sometimes enter in a thrilling matter. Spirituals were used to either encourage the slaves, give them hope, in church, funerals, and when permitted; even weddings. They were also used to communicate with each other to help them escape. For example "Go Down Moses".

Go Down Moses Lyrics: Link

This song has a hidden message through its lyrics, the song implies the evidence that slavery was uncontrolled in the southern part of America. The Egypt part of the song refers to those slave states, the song then becomes a call to abolitionist (a person who wants to end slavery); to take the slaves and go south to help stop slavery.

About Harriet Tubman:

Harriet Tubman was a famous woman, who was born into slavery and was also an escaped enslaved woman. She became a conductor on the underground railroad and was responsible for helping African slaves to escape. However, this act has caused her to carry a bounty on her head. Yet, she additionally worked as a nurse, a union spy, and a women’s suffrage supporter.

Underground Railroad:

When Harrier Tubman found work as a housekeeper in Philadelphia. She wasn't pleased living in freedom on her own, this resulted in assisting to free her loved ones and friends. The underground railroad was a system that existed in the Northern states. It was already built before the Civil War by which escaped slaves from the South. It was called the underground railroad so that it won't raise any suspicions, as its activities had to be carried out in secret.

How are these events still significant today:

Well, a type of slavery is still occurring today, though, it is now known as human trafficking. Human trafficking is somewhat similar to slavery. The only difference between them is human trafficking is when someone is moved to another place, for the purpose of slavery. Slavery is the exploitation of when they arrive in a specific place.

Guns Akimbo - The film!

Text Title: Guns Akimbo

Text Type: Film review

Text Creator: Jason Lei Howden

Text purpose: To entertain people

Date: 9 September 2019

Critical Literacy Question/s: What genre does this belong to?

This genre belongs to comedy, science fiction, thriller, and action.

________________________________________________

The film guns akimbo was funny to me because of the specific scenes in the movie. For example the words and actions they performed during the movie. As for the main character, he first starts off being a kind of a loner and then transforms into a favourite character of many others. I think the reason for this is to show how a character or someone can change, from a short amount of time from the outcome of their actions.

Sensory Language - English

As you know in English we were introduced to creative writing, and that we were given a writing task matrix. This is another one of the six activities that are included in that writing matrix. For this activity, I had to write a short paragraph describing a scene either real or imaginary. However, we had to write as if we were in first person using sensory language that connects to our five senses. Yet, we had to try not to use the words: saw, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt. Anyway, here is the short paragraph that I have made.

The water glistened and shimmered, reflecting the sun’s rays, the waves crashing against the rocks. The salty flavour of the sea travelled through my mouth, as I inhaled the sea’s scent. My feet sensed the warmth and sleekness of the sand below me as It merged with the numbing, chilly seawater.

Language Features - English

In English we are introduced to creative writing and it's types, form, and genres. We have been given a writing task matrix which included six different types of activities that we can do. The first activity I did was language features. In this activity we were required to create a slideshow that shows three terms, it's the definition, an example, and the effect of each. The three terms that I chose were personification, alliteration, and allusion. Anyway, here is the slideshow that I have made.

Physical or Chemical Change - Heating ZnO

Hypothesis: I think that the change will be a chemical change because heat was given out or absorbed during the experiment.

Equipment:

  • Sample of ZnO (Zinc Oxide)
  • Heat source - Hot Plate
  • Scales
  • Heatproof container - evaporating dish
  • Tongs
  • Heatproof mat
Method:

  1. Get a sample of ZnO + container - record weight.
  2. Weight the ZnO and container - record weight.
  3. Heat container + ZnO on the hot plate.
  4. Observe any changes - use a phone for before and after photos (video).
  5. Take off the heat + put on a heatproof mat.
  6. Let cool - observe - photos.
  7. Re-weight.
Results: What happened? - write your description.
The change was a physical change and not a chemical change. When the zinc was heated, there wasn't that much change. Until a few minutes passed the white powder changed to a more pinkish colour, which then turned yellow. However, before we started our experiment, we weighed the dish with the zinc before heating it up on a hot plate. It weighed a total of 57g, this wight remained the same after our experiment was over.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, my hypothesis was wrong even though it was given the heat and there was a colour change. It would then change back to its original colour which made it a physical change. Because it could be reversed easily.
